Some slightly negative press.

The first real review of my work has been published. It’s somewhat negative, and the screensaver comment is a bit harsh but I actually like the review. A lot of the points he brings up are what the work is supposed to be doing. I’ll take it, I respect his opinion, but that doesn’t mean I completely agree.

Sheriff’s Dept.

New stuff brewing. More on the way, but this was a quick 1 week project that had to be about providence. I’ve always found these Sheriff’s buses amazing. Their use of Microsoft Word art is remarkable. The end illustration looks similar to Kevin Cyr’s vehicle paintings, but for this bus, it was the best way to capture it in all of it’s Word art glory. Enjoy. (click it for more clarity)

huge plushies

I was just looking at my web statistics, and noticed that someone found my site by searching for “huge plushies.”

New York Times mention

My bounce house is getting out there. My name was dropped in the New York Times. They did a story on the Wassaic project in Wassaic, NY. My bounce house is currently there, on display through August 16th. The Times didn’t post any pictures of the bounce house, but you can find them here: http://www.colinwilliams.org/empire.html

And here’s the article: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/07/29/arts/design/29wassaic.html?ref=arts

Another great website.

Need to find anything on the web? Let me google that for you.

New website

As you may have noticed, I updated my website and gave it a coat of fresh paint. It’s not that there was anything wrong design wise with my previous website, it was just next to impossible to update. And what’s the point of having a website if it’s not up to date? Well this current version is very easy to update, so I’m happy.

Hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

The Empire bounce house.

So I’ve been posting I don’t even know how many entries about The Empire, but this is how I originally realized the project, and thankfully it arrived here in time for my crit. My crit was yesterday. It was a good crit, but didn’t leave me with a lot to consider further.

The Empire walks a fine line between boring and fun. While the aspect of the bounce house will always be fun, in its design, The Empire is perhaps the most boring bounce house imaginable.

Here are some pictures:
wide-small
close-small
I have some video too of people bouncing in it (thanks to Elizabeth Skadden). I’ll post that when I get around to it.

And amazingly I am now finished with my first year of Graduate School.

Bounce house + Awards of Excellence

Bounce house is on its way to me. Should arrive here by Monday. I would post some pictures, but I’ll hold off on that until I get it here and can take some better pictures.

It has cost my quite a big chunk of change, but I just found out today that I won an Awards of Excellence award. Which is very nice and means I will be less in debt next year.

Here’s what the juror said about my work:
“Williams’ creative trajectory developed from more basic digital interventions into photographic architectural representations into more complex relationship to the model and its source. Sprawl architecture, both urban and suburban, is critically engaged in a way that evokes the bleak starkness of Spaghetti Western stage sets.”

Pictures of the bounce house, plus a bounce party next week, keep your eyes peeled.

The Empire (animation)

I’ve uploaded the animation in HD on vimeo.  It still looks pretty crappy, don’t let that HD word tell you otherwise; but it’s better than nothing.

The animation is on view at the Boston Cyberarts Festival (Opening April 25th).

The bounce house (bounce castle, moon bounce, whatever you wish to call it) is being produced currently and will hopefully arrive here in time for my crit.  It’s being shipped via sea, so it will have to go through the Panama Canal (thus taking a long time).  Guess I should look into how much it would cost to send it via air.

The Empire

It is my pleasure to present to you a new house model, The Empire.

the-empire

Drawn from scratch (no original reference picture), the empire is available as a print, an animation (premiering at Risties – http://www.risties.com), and will soon be available as a bounce house.

Deposits are currently being accepted, act quickly, because this opportunity will not last long.
